Naval Group Lorient secures long-term orders for Greek and French frigates
Naval Group’s shipyard in Lorient, France, is maintaining a high volume of orders for defense vessels, with production scheduled to continue until at least 2034. The facility is currently working on several FDI (Defense and Intervention) frigates for France and Greece, as well as upcoming orders for Sweden.
For the Hellenic Navy, the Nearchos is undergoing final checks for delivery by the end of the year, while the Formion is expected in December. A fourth Greek frigate, the Themistokles, is currently in the assembly phase with delivery anticipated in 2028.
In parallel, Greece is advancing its domestic defense capabilities through its Agenda 2030 reform program. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced plans to mass-produce the Greek-designed Pyrpolitis unmanned surface vessel. The goal is to establish the Greek Navy as a leader in autonomous maritime platforms by 2030, focusing on self-reliance in defense technology and the development of autonomous systems capable of surveillance, reconnaissance, and coordinated swarming operations.
