Navalcarnero Evacuees Await Return Home Amid Madrid Forest Fires

The municipal sports centre El Pijorro in Navalcarnero has been turned into an emergency shelter for residents displaced by forest fires affecting the southwest of Madrid and the border region of Ávila. Around 25 people are currently housed there, and more than 60 have passed through in recent days. The facility provides mattresses, blankets, hot meals, fruit, pastries, water, a television with Netflix, as well as psychological support from volunteers and municipal staff.

José Luis Gómez Arribas, coordinator of Navalcarnero’s municipal Civil Protection service, said evacuees are eager to return home and worried about the condition of their houses, pets, medicines and personal belongings. Many of those sheltering come from Aldea del Fresno, Villa del Prado and Cenicientos. Some have found accommodation with relatives, while others have been placed in hostels or other homes arranged by the Community of Madrid and social services.
