Nawaf Salam clarifies foreign policy role and financial reform status
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam issued a clarification addressing criticisms made by Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea regarding the role of the Foreign Ministry and the progress of financial reforms.
Regarding foreign policy, Salam emphasized that the Cabinet is responsible for setting general state policy, while individual ministers manage their respective departments. He stated he is in constant coordination with Foreign Minister Raji and confirmed that the Minister will accompany him to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly and join him for meetings with the U.S. Secretary of State in Washington.
On the subject of economic reform, Salam noted that the government has prepared three key legislative projects: banking secrecy, banking reform, and the financial gap law. He clarified that the financial gap law has been pending in Parliament for over nine months and expressed the government's desire for the legislature to expedite its discussion and approval to maintain credibility with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He added that the government remains in near-daily contact with the IMF to reach an agreement.
