Nawaf Salam seeks tangible results for Southern Lebanon
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has stated that ensuring services and the return of residents to Southern Lebanon requires tangible results on the ground. During his fourth visit to Nabatieh and Tyre, Salam emphasized the government's commitment to supporting residents despite limited resources. His objectives include verifying the restoration of water and electricity, implementing service contracts, and repairing schools to ensure residents feel secure.
Addressing economic concerns, Salam attributed rising fuel prices to global trends rather than new domestic taxes. He acknowledged the public's suffering and noted recent increases in public sector salaries and new aid packages. While acknowledging limited resources, he pledged to ensure market oversight to prevent merchants from exploiting citizens through disproportionate price hikes.
Regarding political rumors, Salam denied that any government reshuffle is currently under consideration. He argued that changing the government would not provide solutions, as the fundamental issue remains the scarcity of resources. He also noted that while he supports the symbolic value of holding cabinet meetings in the south, he prefers to wait until real, felt changes are implemented to avoid appearing purely symbolic.
