Nayib Bukele denies allegations of Salvadoran troop bombings in Haiti

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has categorically rejected allegations from the United Nations Association-Haiti (UNA-Haiti) that Salvadoran troops have conducted aerial bombardments and heavy weapon attacks against civilian communities near Port-au-Prince.

Bukele stated that the Salvadoran mission does not have bombs at its disposal and noted that attack helicopters did not arrive in Haiti until October 29, whereas the UNA-Haiti report was dated October 28. He accused the NGO of acting as a lobbying firm for criminals and cartels while masquerading as a humanitarian organization.

The military deployment, which exceeds 2,000 troops, was initiated to locate four Salvadoran aviation technicians who have been missing since an ambush on October 18 in the Croix-des-Bouquets area. While Donald Trump confirmed he told Bukele to “do what you have to do” regarding the mission, he suggested that El Salvador does not require additional assistance from the United States.

Salvadoran authorities maintain the operation is a coordinated effort with the Haitian government to combat gang violence and is not an invasion.
