Haiti security mission continues after Salvadoran soldiers' disappearance

The Gang Suppression Force (GSF), a UN-authorized multinational mission in Haiti, has reaffirmed its commitment to its mandate following an ambush on October 18, 2026, that left four Salvadoran aviation technicians missing near Croix-des-Bouquets.

While the GSF confirmed receiving unidentified human remains via a humanitarian organization that could potentially belong to the missing personnel, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has denied these claims. Bukele stated the remains do not match the physical characteristics of the Salvadoran soldiers and noted the presence of identification and uniforms from other nations.

In response to the incident, El Salvador deployed approximately 450 special forces soldiers to support search operations and security efforts in the region. Meanwhile, Dominican President Luis Abinader has expressed willingness to support the Salvadoran government through logistics, intelligence, and medical assistance, though he reiterated that the Dominican Republic will not send troops to Haiti.
