NBA bans specific betting markets and restricts parlays

The NBA has introduced sweeping new restrictions on sports betting markets for the upcoming season to protect the integrity of the game. Following recent gambling scandals involving players like Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier, the league has instructed authorized sportsbook partners, including FanDuel and DraftKings, to ban specific types of wagers.

Prohibited markets include 'first-of' bets (such as the winner of the opening tip or the first player to record a specific statistic), certain player prop parlays, and 'under' bets for players expected to play fewer than 12 minutes. These measures aim to eliminate high-risk markets that were previously exploited to manipulate outcomes.

To bolster oversight, the NBA is implementing several integrity measures. These include the use of artificial intelligence to monitor suspicious betting patterns via injury reports and social media, as well as mandatory in-person training for all players, coaches, and technical staff regarding league betting rules. These new regulations are also slated to extend to the WNBA starting in 2027.

Additionally, the league is reinforcing penalties for players who simulate contact or exaggerate fouls to deceive officials, utilizing technical fouls, fines, and potential suspensions to ensure consistent officiating.
