NBA sports betting market restrictions

Overview

To protect game integrity following gambling scandals involving players such as Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier, the NBA has implemented sweeping restrictions on specific sports betting markets. The league has coordinated with authorized sportsbook partners, including FanDuel and DraftKings, to prohibit wagers that are vulnerable to manipulation.

Prohibited markets include ‘first-of’ bets, such as jump ball outcomes, and certain player prop parlays. The league is specifically targeting ‘under’ bets for players expected to play fewer than 12 minutes, as well as wagers on specific missed shots, to prevent athletes from simulating physical issues to influence outcomes. NBA Executive Vice President Scott Kaufman-Ross noted the league aims to eliminate problematic betting types without driving users toward unregulated markets.

To bolster oversight, the NBA is utilizing artificial intelligence to monitor suspicious betting patterns through injury reports and social media. Additionally, the league is implementing mandatory in-person training for players, coaches, and technical staff regarding betting rules, while reinforcing penalties for players who simulate contact or exaggerate fouls.
