NBA Owerri Chairman denies misappropriating N100m government grant
Mazi Udegbulem, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Owerri Branch, has denied allegations of misappropriating a N100 million grant provided by the Imo State government. Udegbulem stated that the funds were paid directly into the branch's official account on August 24, 2026, and were used for approved projects including solar power installations, air conditioners, and member welfare.
Udegbulem announced he will not appear before a five-member committee established by the branch to investigate the matter. He cited concerns regarding bias and the existence of parallel proceedings, noting that the NBA National President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has already constituted a separate three-member panel. He argued that participating in the branch-level probe would constitute insubordination and that a fair hearing is impossible because some committee members have already made public accusations against him on social media.
According to Udegbulem, the total funds available, including a previous balance, amounted to approximately N106.35 million. He provided a breakdown of expenditures, including N42.18 million for Annual General Conference logistics, N17.5 million for a solar power system, N5.41 million for air conditioners, and N10.3 million for welfare support to 206 members, leaving a reported balance of N18.9 million.
