Nigerian Bar Association investigation into Imo State funds

Overview

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) initiated an investigation into a ₦100 million gift provided by the Imo State Government to the NBA Owerri Branch. NBA President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, established a three-member committee to examine the receipt, management, and disbursement of the funds following concerns raised by branch members.

In response, Mazi Udegbulem, Chairman of the NBA Owerri Branch, denied allegations of misappropriation. He stated that the funds were deposited into the branch’s official account in August 2026 and utilized for approved projects, including solar power installations, air conditioning, and member welfare.

Udegbulem announced his refusal to appear before a five-member branch-level committee, citing potential bias and the existence of a separate national-level panel. He argued that participating in the local probe would constitute “insubordination” and claimed a fair hearing was impossible due to public accusations made against him on social media.
