NBA plans historic investment in new European basketball league

The NBA is preparing to launch a new European league in October 2027, representing what deputy commissioner Mark Tatum describes as the largest investment in the history of European basketball. The project, a partnership with FIBA, will utilize a merit-based system where permanent franchises coexist with teams that qualify through performance in other leagues.

Financial projections for the new venture aim to provide clubs with a significantly faster path to profitability, with permanent teams expected to reach profitability, on average, by their third year. Tatum stated that the NBA’s projected financial distributions to clubs over the first decade could triple the amounts estimated in the EuroLeague’s ten-year plan, potentially reaching billions or even tens of billions of dollars.

Investment funds are earmarked for academies, grassroots development, league operations, marketing, and arena infrastructure. While EuroLeague owners recently rejected an initial merger proposal, the NBA and FIBA remain hopeful that an agreement can still be reached, though they are prepared to proceed independently.
