NBI detains individual linked to Banga school shooting

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has taken a person into custody who may be connected to the fatal shooting at Banga National High School in South Cotabato. The September 18 attack resulted in the deaths of three students, including the shooter, and left several others wounded. Authorities are investigating whether the shooter was influenced by online communities.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag also reported the apprehension of a suspected online groomer in Cebu. The bureau has increased its monitoring of violent online communities and grooming activities on the deep and dark web following a rise in school-related violence.

In response to the tragedy, the Department of Education has provided psychological first aid to those affected. Mental health experts are calling for improved measurement of student well-being, suggesting that nationwide mental health surveys could help identify distress and social isolation before they escalate into violence.
