Overview

On September 18, a 16-year-old student opened fire at Banga National High School in South Cotabato, Philippines. The attack, which involved a 9mm pistol taken from the suspect’s father, resulted in multiple casualties. Reports indicate between three and six deaths, including the shooter who committed suicide, and at least eight student injuries.

Investigations revealed the suspect had allegedly discussed his plans in a group chat as early as August. Authorities are examining potential ties to an online ‘True Crime Community’ where school shooters are reportedly idolized.

Following the incident, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) detained an individual potentially linked to the shooting. The NBI has since increased monitoring of violent online communities and grooming activities on the deep and dark web. In response to the tragedy, the Department of Education has provided psychological support, while mental health experts have called for improved nationwide surveys to identify student distress and social isolation.
