NC State fires head football coach Dave Doeren
North Carolina State University has dismissed head football coach Dave Doeren, effective immediately. The decision follows a 31-28 road loss to Stanford, which left the Wolfpack with a 3-4 season record and a 1-3 standing in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Doeren, who led the program for 14 seasons since 2013, departs as the winningest coach in school history with a record of 98-74. During his tenure, he led the team to 11 bowl game appearances. Reports indicate the university may owe Doeren a buyout between $9.75 million and $10.3 million to fulfill the remainder of his contract, which was set to run through 2029.
Athletic director Boo Corrigan announced that Todd Goebbel, the current running backs coach and special teams coordinator, will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the season. The university has launched an immediate national search for a permanent replacement. Former NC State quarterback Philip Rivers has been mentioned in reports as a potential candidate for the position.
