Ghana's National Democratic Congress sets 2026 internal election timetable

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) of Ghana released a detailed timetable for its 2026 internal elections covering constituency, regional and national executive positions. Nominations for constituency executives open on 15 September 2026 and close on 17 September, with filing on 23‑24 September and vetting from 25‑27 September. Appeals run 29 September‑1 October and the constituency elections are set for 24‑25 October. Regional executive nominations open on 6‑7 October, filing on 14‑15 October, with elections to follow. National executive nominations open on 20 October, filing on 21‑22 October, vetting on 12‑13 November and elections thereafter. The party said the schedule aims to ensure transparent, credible and well‑organised internal elections ahead of the 2028 general election.

The NDC is also overhauling its internal voting system. Former parliamentary aspirant William Kpormatsi welcomed the abolition of the delegate system, stating, “The delegates system is abolished, but we still need branch executives for stronger political structures and systems.” Party chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah warned that the delegate system had become a source of corruption, noting that “huge sums of money are paid to delegates” and that candidates often spend more on nominations than they earn in four‑year parliamentary terms. The reforms aim to broaden participation through universal member suffrage and reduce financial influence in candidate selection.
