NDLEA arrests 101-year-old woman and seizes N4.4bn in drugs
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conducted a series of major operations across Nigeria, resulting in significant drug seizures and arrests. In Ogun State, 101-year-old Esther Ogunmabo was arrested in Ilisan for allegedly selling cannabis in retail sachets. Ogunmabo reportedly turned to the trade after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire. Due to her advanced age, NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Marwa directed that she be granted bail and receive counselling; her daughter has also been arrested in connection with the supply chain.
In a major maritime breakthrough, the NDLEA intercepted two containers at the Apapa and Lekki ports in Lagos containing approximately 1.49 tonnes of synthetic cannabis, known as ‘Loud’. The shipment, which originated from the Port of Laem Chabang in Thailand, has an estimated street value exceeding N4.4 billion. This marks the agency’s first recorded seizure of drugs arriving from Thailand via maritime routes.
Additionally, in Akwa Ibom State, operatives intercepted a wooden boat on the high seas attempting to transport narcotics toward fishing settlements in Cameroon. The operation led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of over 42 kilograms of narcotics, including cocaine that had been concealed inside cassava fufu.
