NDLEA dismantles Ebonyi meth lab and arrests Mexican drug kingpin
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi State and arrested Arturo Carrera Loaiza, a Mexican national identified as a drug kingpin. Loaiza was apprehended on August 19, 2026, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while allegedly attempting to flee Nigeria.
The operation is the result of a months-long investigation into a transnational criminal network attempting to establish drug production facilities within Nigeria’s rural and forested areas. The investigation traces back to earlier arrests in Ogun and Oyo states, including the June 17 arrest of 56-year-old Mexican methamphetamine expert Jose Villa Ochoa. Investigators established that Loaiza had recruited Ochoa to facilitate production in Nigeria.
In Ebonyi State, authorities discovered the laboratory at a construction site in Isiata Ugoni Okposi. The raid yielded a substantial cache of laboratory equipment and precursor chemicals, including acetone and hydrochloric acid. Digital evidence, including images of Loaiza in a laboratory coat, helped link him to the site. Loaiza claimed he entered Nigeria via a contact named Henry to start a restaurant business, but investigators have countered this with forensic evidence.
