NDLEA destroys ₦301bn in drugs and arrests businessman in Lagos
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conducted extensive anti-narcotics operations across Nigeria, resulting in massive seizures and the destruction of illicit substances worth approximately ₦301 billion in Lagos. The destruction exercise, ordered by the Federal High Court, involved over 329,865kg of drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis, and various opioids.
In a high-profile arrest at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, 48-year-old businessman Nwankwo Onyebuchi was apprehended with 1.550kg of cocaine concealed within the structure of his luggage. Onyebuchi reportedly liquidated his marble business and other assets to fund the ₦23 million consignment, which he intended to sell in India for an estimated ₦100 million.
Other significant operations in Lagos included the recovery of 377,600 bottles of codeine-based syrup, valued at over ₦2.6 billion, from a warehouse in Okota. Additionally, a raid on the residence of Shoremi Kayode led to the seizure of 324kg of Colorado synthetic cannabis, valued at ₦972 million.
Across other states, the NDLEA reported major busts in Kano, Kwara, Oyo, Delta, Edo, and Plateau, seizing hundreds of thousands of pills of tramadol, Rohypnol, and other controlled substances, as well as large quantities of skunk and cannabis.
