NDLEA enhances narcotics detection with German-led canine training
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conducted a specialized refresher training course for its Canine Unit to enhance narcotics detection capabilities at Nigeria’s entry points. The program was facilitated by technical experts Andreas Roscher and Jacqueline Shüler from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).
Participants included the Canine Unit commander, two veterinary doctors, and eight dog handlers, along with five additional officers interested in joining the unit. The training involved advanced obedience, scent imprinting, search patterns, and handler safety. Practical simulation exercises were carried out at several key locations, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) baggage hall, APM Terminals Apapa, and the MMIA NAHCO export shed.
NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa stated that canine teams are among the agency’s most potent assets for intercepting concealed narcotics at airports, seaports, and borders. Marwa noted that the agency is working to address manpower and logistics gaps, including the need for more service dogs, handlers, and boarding facilities to ensure adequate coverage across the country.
