Negeri Sembilan faces constitutional crisis over royal succession

A constitutional crisis is unfolding in Negeri Sembilan following a decision by the State Executive Council (MMK) to recognize a proclamation of dethronement for Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir. The MMK, supported by Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim, maintains that the proclamation dated April 19, 2026, is valid and that Tuanku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar is the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar, effective immediately.

However, the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) has challenged this, asserting that Tuanku Muhriz remains the lawful ruler. The DKU maintains that the MMK lacks the jurisdiction to determine the validity of the proclamation and that the attempt to remove the ruler contravenes both customary law and the State Constitution.

Legal representatives for Tuanku Muhriz have accused the state government of a “coup d’état” and an act of treason, claiming the announcement is unconstitutional and violates existing High Court injunctive orders. They have threatened contempt proceedings against the state authorities. Meanwhile, DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke has called for the resignation of MMK members if they refuse to recognize Tuanku Muhriz, citing the principles of a Constitutional Monarchy.
