Overview
A constitutional crisis has emerged in Negeri Sembilan involving the state ruler, Tuanku Muhriz, and Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim. Initially, Ismail issued a statement affirming his full loyalty to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar following allegations by the Undang Yang Empat that a proclamation of abdication for the ruler had been signed on August 3.
However, the situation escalated when Ismail alleged he was coerced into signing the instrument of proclamation intended to remove Tuanku Muhriz. He has since lodged a police report to investigate claims of duress regarding the document, which was reportedly signed by him and four chieftains.
Political responses have been mixed. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that the claims should be verified by the lawyer present during the signing and denied receiving a resignation letter from the Menteri Besar. Meanwhile, DAP vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan has called for transparency and a formal investigation to determine if political leaders were involved in the alleged coercion.
