Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also chair of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, warned that the royal institution and the Federal Constitution must not be used as political fodder ahead of the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election on 1 August. He urged PH supporters to conduct a dignified campaign and announced a slate of 36 PH candidates, with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun positioned as the coalition’s sole “poster boy” for the chief ministership.

Four constituencies – Linggi, Sikamat, Rantau and Chennah – were identified as “hot seats” where high‑profile politicians will contest. PH aims to win at least 20 of the 36 state assembly seats, citing its 2018 record of securing the same number. The candidate list, released at Dataran Melang, includes representatives from PKR, DAP and Amanah.

Political analysts highlighted the upcoming election as a test of the Malay‑vote unification formula used by Barisan Nasional (BN) in Johor, noting potential informal cooperation between UMNO and PAS. PAS has signalled willingness to support an UMNO‑led Menteri Besar if the alliance holds.

The election timetable sets 18 July for nomination day, a pre‑polling period beginning 28 July, and the poll on 1 August. Authorities and party leaders emphasized respect for the state’s constitutional monarchy and traditional institutions throughout the campaign.
