Nehil Sazlığı drought threatens fish populations
In Hakkâri’s Yüksekova district, the Nehil Sazlığı wetland is facing an ecological crisis due to severe drought. As water levels drop significantly, thousands of fish have become trapped in shrinking, muddy pools. Local residents report that many fish have already died, and there are urgent calls for authorities to intervene and relocate the remaining population to a dam to prevent total loss within days.
In a separate environmental development, management at Yellowstone National Park has reached a milestone in a 30-year effort to protect native species. Since 1994, continuous netting operations have removed over 4.9 million invasive lake trout from Yellowstone Lake. This intensive management has led to an 80% to 90% reduction in adult invasive trout, allowing native cutthroat trout populations to begin recovering.
