Nehil Sazlığı wetland drought in Hakkâri

Overview

Severe drought in the Yüksekova district of Hakkâri has caused water levels to recede significantly in the Nehil Sazlığı wetland. This environmental crisis left thousands of fish trapped in shrinking, muddy pools and streams across the villages of Çukurca, Dedeler, and Demirkonak.

In response to reports of mass fish mortality, the Yüksekova District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and the Yüksekova Municipality initiated emergency interventions. Fire department teams utilized tankers to provide ‘life water’ (can suyu) to drying streams, while fisheries engineers and local officials worked to relocate fish from high-risk areas to safer water sources. Local villagers also assisted by releasing their own water resources into the streams to support the ecosystem.
