Nelson police custody investigation closed by IIO
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia has concluded its investigation into the arrest of a youth in Nelson on August 11, 2026. The probe focused on injuries the youth sustained while in custody following an arrest by the Nelson Police Department.
According to the IIO, the youth appeared intoxicated and became uncooperative during the arrest on Hume Lane. After being transported to police cells, the youth sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently treated by BC Emergency Health Services and transported to a hospital before being released to his parents.
The IIO's chief civilian director reviewed the evidence and determined there is no connection between police actions or inaction and the injuries sustained by the youth. The investigation is now officially closed.
