Neoenergia secures R$ 857 million green loan from EIB for Brazilian grid modernization

Neoenergia, a subsidiary of the Spanish energy group Iberdrola, has secured a green loan of R$ 857 million (approximately €128 million) from the European Investment Bank (EIB) through EIB Global. The funds are designated for the expansion and modernization of the electrical distribution network operated by Elektro in the Brazilian states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, covering 228 municipalities.

The investment, guaranteed by the Spanish export credit agency Cesce, will focus on renovating distribution lines, substations, and control and protection systems. It also aims to increase network automation and reduce technical losses to improve reliability and facilitate the connection of renewable energy generators.

This agreement marks the second green financing deal between Neoenergia and the EIB in less than a year, following a €300 million agreement in 2025 for the Coelba concessionaire in Bahia. Both operations are part of the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative, which seeks to promote clean and secure digital, energy, and transport connections globally.
