Neoenergia energy infrastructure expansion in Brazil
Overview
Neoenergia, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, has undertaken significant expansions of its energy infrastructure and financing in Brazil.
In early October, the company expanded its strategic partnership with Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, GIC, by incorporating seven new assets into the Neoenergia Transmissão joint venture. This expansion increased Neoenergia’s stake to 51%, bringing the platform to 16 projects covering 6,710 kilometers of transmission lines across several states, including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Bahia. The infrastructure is intended to transport energy from renewable sites in the northeast to industrial centers in the southeast.
Later in the month, Neoenergia secured an R$ 857 million green loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to modernize the electrical distribution network operated by Elektro. This investment, part of the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative, will target 228 municipalities in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul to renovate distribution lines, substations, and automation systems.
