Microsoft updates Visual Studio Code with faster AI agent sessions
Microsoft has released updates for Visual Studio Code, focusing heavily on enhancing AI agent workflows and developer productivity.
In version 1.139, the editor introduces significant performance improvements for large AI agent session lists. By implementing a centralized lightweight metadata directory instead of scanning individual databases, the initial loading of session lists is up to 12 times faster, reducing wait times from 1.3 seconds to 0.1 seconds. The update also extends Dev Container support to remote SSH, Tunnel, and WSL hosts, allowing agents to run directly within a project's existing toolchain and dependencies.
Earlier iterations, such as version 1.137, introduced features including scheduled automation for agent tasks, an experimental voice mode for interacting with sessions, and improved integration with GitHub issues and pull requests. This version also featured an interactive AI mascot, or ‘pet’, designed to provide visual notifications and reactions during agent tasks.
