Microsoft expands AI agent tools and local inference

Overview

Microsoft’s AI development platform has continued to mature since the April 2026 launch of the Unified Agent Framework, which merged the Semantic Kernel and AutoGen SDKs. That launch also introduced an Agent Host Protocol in Visual Studio Code, moving AI coding agents such as GitHub Copilot, Claude and Codex into dedicated host threads. In August 2026, Microsoft released its Discovery platform for research coordination and promoted the Agent Framework to version 1.0 GA, adding the Agent Harness and Foundry Hosted Agents. Alongside this, Visual Studio Code 1.141 introduced sandboxing for Copilot to provide an isolation layer, limiting an agent's access to specific files and network resources to mitigate risks like prompt injection.

On 13 October, GitHub Copilot Studio launched, integrating AI tools to automate code refactoring and provide suggestions for collaborative coding. Additionally, Azure AI Foundry updated its platform to streamline the deployment of custom AI models via automated pipelines.
