Nepal activists demand climate justice after devastating Rasuwa floods

Climate activists in Kathmandu have staged protests and a candlelight vigil to demand climate justice following the devastating Rasuwa floods in August. The demonstration included a human chain formation and a minute of silence at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The floods, described as a “Himalayan Tsunami,” were triggered by a rock-and-ice avalanche on August 26. The disaster has resulted in over 1,400 deaths, with more than 6,000 people still missing. The destruction has directly affected over 70,000 individuals, many of whom have been left homeless.

Activists are calling on the international community to reduce carbon emissions, warning that the crisis currently facing Nepal will eventually impact other nations if global climate trends are not addressed.
