Nepal and China face heavy casualties from Bhotekoshi glacier flood

A catastrophic flood triggered by a glacier collapse and subsequent landslide at the Nepal-China border has resulted in significant loss of life and infrastructure destruction. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 538 people have died in Nepal, with approximately 1,000 people still missing, many of whom are believed to be tourists. In China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, authorities report that about 560 people remain missing.

The disaster, linked to the Bhotekoshi flood, was preceded by a massive avalanche near Langtang Lirung that generated seismic tremors of 5.2 on the Richter scale. An estimated 74 million cubic meters of ice, rock, and debris flowed into the Lhende River, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges, and entire communities in the Nepalese districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading.

In the wake of the event, researchers from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology have highlighted broader environmental concerns. A study published in Discover Geoscience found that 23 major glaciers in India’s Uttarakhand state are retreating rapidly due to rising global temperatures. This trend increases the risk of similar disasters in the Himalayan region, which provides essential water for drinking, irrigation, and hydropower to several neighboring countries.
