Nepal and China face mass casualties after glacier collapse

A massive glacier collapse on the border of Nepal and China has triggered devastating floods, resulting in significant casualties and thousands of missing persons. In Nepal, authorities have recovered the remains of approximately 1,399 people, while 4,089 individuals remain missing, including 610 foreigners. The recovery process is complicated by the fact that many recovered remains are fragmented, making identification difficult. To assist in the process, officials have collected DNA samples from nearly 1,300 deceased individuals and 1,900 relatives.

The disaster also had a heavy toll in China's Tibet region, where 43 deaths and 519 disappearances have been reported. Additionally, three deaths were recorded in India. The floods, which began on August 26, are believed to have been caused by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier, a finding supported by international satellite analysis.

In response to the catastrophe, Nepal's parliament has declared climate change a national security threat. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called for international cooperation, emphasizing that Nepal cannot face this crisis alone and urging the global community to share responsibility for climate mitigation. The estimated cost for recovery and reconstruction is expected to exceed $4.7 billion.
