Nepal flood and avalanche crisis: 5,133 people remain missing

Two weeks after a devastating avalanche of ice, water, and rocks swept through northern and central Nepal, authorities report that 5,133 people remain missing, including 587 foreign tourists.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has confirmed the recovery of 1,367 bodies and human remains across 15 priority disaster zones. To date, only 102 victims have been identified and returned to their families. A massive forensic operation is underway, utilizing 2,698 DNA samples collected from both recovered remains and family members to facilitate identification. This effort is being supported by specialists from China, India, and South Korea.

In the neighboring Chinese region of Tibet, the disaster has resulted in at least 43 deaths and 519 missing persons.

The humanitarian crisis continues as over 3,600 people are displaced in 37 temporary shelters in Nuwakot, Rasuwa, and Dhading. Overcrowding and water contamination in these camps have raised significant concerns regarding the outbreak of diseases such as cholera. Additionally, the destruction of critical infrastructure, including bridges and roads, has isolated numerous communities and hindered the distribution of tons of humanitarian aid currently held in logistics centers.
