Nepal and China border floods kill at least 469 people
Devastating flash floods and landslides in the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China have resulted in at least 469 deaths and over 1,500 injuries. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with thousands of personnel from the Nepal Army and Police deployed to assist victims.
In Nepal, authorities report that hundreds of people remain missing, including citizens from approximately 30 different countries. Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has ordered the urgent relocation of residents from high-risk areas. The disaster has caused widespread destruction to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydroelectric projects.
On the Chinese side in Tibet, authorities have recorded 3 deaths and 558 missing persons. Rescue efforts in Tibet have faced temporary suspensions due to the formation of a new lake containing approximately 2 million cubic meters of water, which poses a significant risk of further flooding. The United Nations is coordinating the delivery of aid and personnel to the affected regions to support recovery efforts.
