Nepal and Tibet floods kill at least 469, leaving 1,400 missing
Devastating floods and landslides triggered by a suspected glacial collapse have caused catastrophic destruction across the border region of Nepal and Tibet. The death toll has risen to at least 469, with more than 1,400 people still reported missing. The disaster has heavily impacted the Nuwakot district in Nepal, specifically destroying settlements such as Devighat, Dhunge Bazaar, and Trishuli Bazaar.
Many of the missing are believed to be foreign tourists, including several Italians. While some individuals, such as Stefano Lomuto and Valentina Piccinini, have been rescued, others remain unaccounted for. In Tibet, Chinese authorities successfully evacuated 555 stranded tourists but have since suspended rescue operations due to the high risk of further flooding from a newly formed debris lake.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an emergency appeal for 25 million Swiss francs to support immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts. Rescue teams continue to work through mud and debris, utilizing helicopters and search dogs to locate survivors.
