Nepal and Tibet floods leave 543 dead and 1,500 missing
Massive flooding and landslides triggered by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border have resulted in at least 543 deaths and left over 1,500 people missing. The disaster, which occurred near the Himalayan mountain range, has caused widespread destruction across Nepal's Bagmati province and China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
Scientific analysis from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests the event was caused by a large-scale glacier and rock collapse at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters, rather than an earthquake. The impact of the collapse was equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 seismic event, sending debris and water down rivers for nearly 100 kilometers. Experts warn of a ‘hazard cascade,’ where initial debris creates natural dams that could lead to secondary and tertiary floods and landslides.
Rescue operations are currently focused on the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower plant, where approximately 100 people remain trapped in tunnels. Among the missing are nine South Korean employees from Korea South-East Power and Doosan Enerbility. While several nations, including the U.S., UK, and India, have offered humanitarian aid and search-and-rescue assistance, the Nepalese government has stated that its own security forces are capable of managing the operations without foreign rescue teams at this time.
