Nepal and Tibet hit by devastating floods following glacier collapse

A massive flood and debris flow triggered by a glacier collapse has caused widespread devastation across Nepal and China’s Tibet region. The disaster has affected approximately 93,000 people, with death tolls rising significantly. In Nepal, authorities reported at least 616 fatalities, while over 2,500 people remain missing, including 517 foreigners and 933 workers from major hydroelectric projects.

The impact extends into India, where seven bodies were recovered from rivers flowing from Nepal. In Tibet, seven deaths have been reported and 554 people are missing. Rescue operations have involved the evacuation of hundreds of tourists and Chinese citizens.

Infrastructure damage is extensive, with dozens of bridges destroyed and roads washed away. Search and rescue efforts are being conducted by 15,000 security personnel using helicopters to reach isolated areas. The U.S. Geological Survey noted that a 5.2 magnitude seismic event preceded the flooding, suggesting the disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse and subsequent avalanche.
