Bhotekoshi flood in Nepal causes massive displacement and economic loss

A devastating flood triggered by an avalanche in the Lehandekhola watershed has caused massive destruction across Nepal. The Bhotekoshi River flood, which flowed through the Trishuli and Narayani rivers, has displaced approximately 32,963 people from 8,317 families. Nuwakot and Rasuwa were among the hardest-hit districts.

Government assessments indicate catastrophic economic losses. Total physical and economic losses are estimated to exceed Rs 408.28 billion. Infrastructure damage alone is valued at approximately Rs 172.34 billion, with the energy sector suffering the most significant impact at Rs 134.69 billion. The total cost for reconstruction and recovery is estimated at over Rs 723 billion.

In response, Bagmati Province Chief Minister Kiran Thapa Magar announced plans to resettle flood victims in safer locations, emphasizing that new settlements should not be built along riverbanks. The provincial government is also working to provide free education up to Grade 12 for affected children and is coordinating with the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry to provide employment for victims.

To address ongoing geological instability, such as the landslides at the Narayangadh–Muglin road section, engineers are preparing to implement the “nailing” technique. This involves driving rods into slopes to strengthen the ground, supplemented by bio-engineering and horizontal drains to manage water seepage.
