Nepal-China border flash flood causes mass casualties and widespread destruction FAST-MOVING
A massive flash flood in the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China has caused catastrophic destruction, leaving at least 469 people dead in Nepal and more than 1,400 people missing across the Tibetan and Nepalese territories. The disaster, potentially triggered by a landslide or a glacial lake outburst, has buried buildings under mud and debris. While traditional monitoring is too costly for vast regions like the Himalayas, an automated system using seismometers to detect surface vibrations could provide critical warnings for rockfalls and flash floods. Implementing such technology would require enhanced measurement networks and international cooperation, including funding from organizations like the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank.
