Nepal-China border floods caused by glacier and bedrock collapse

Catastrophic flash floods near the Nepal-China border, triggered by a massive glacier and bedrock collapse, have resulted in hundreds of deaths and numerous people missing. Satellite imagery reveals that a large section of bedrock underneath a glacier near Langtang Lirung peak failed, taking a massive chunk of ice with it and sending boulders, ice, and debris into the valley.

The resulting surge of water and mud, several stories high, swept through communities along the Trishuli River, burying villages and significantly widening the riverbed.

Among the missing are at least 23 individuals linked to Gujarat, India, many of whom were traveling on the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route through Kerung. The missing include Indian-origin citizens from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Search and rescue efforts continue as authorities track those last seen near the China border immigration center and various trekking routes.
