Nepal-China border floods leave hundreds dead and thousands missing
Catastrophic flooding and a landslide of ice and rock along the Nepal-China border have resulted in a massive humanitarian crisis. At least 580 people are dead and more than 2,000 remain missing after the Trishuli River burst its banks.
The U.S. State Department reports that approximately 90 Americans are currently unaccounted for in the devastated border region. While five Americans have been safely evacuated, officials stated there are no confirmed U.S. citizen fatalities at this time.
In addition to American citizens, 38 Australians are confirmed missing. The Emergency Action Alliance, a coalition of 15 Australian charities including Oxfam and Save the Children, has warned that survivors face critical shortages of food, clean drinking water, medical care, and reliable shelter as search and rescue operations continue.
