Nepal-China border floods leave over 1,450 dead and thousands missing
A catastrophic flash flood, triggered by a massive ice and rock avalanche near the Nepal-China border on August 26, 2026, has caused widespread devastation across the Himalayan region. The disaster, which impacted the Langtang, Bhotekoshi, and Trishuli river areas, has resulted in an estimated death toll of over 1,450 people. More than 5,700 individuals remain missing in Nepal, while China reports 261 foreign nationals missing on its side.
Among the missing are dozens of Ukrainians who were participating in a spiritual retreat at Mount Kailash. The search and recovery efforts are significantly hindered by the destruction of Nepal’s immigration complex and its records. Humanitarian organizations, including UNICEF, estimate that 84,000 people have been affected, including 32,000 children. Relief efforts are underway, with groups like Korea Food for the Hungry International and Heart to Heart International providing food, hygiene kits, and educational supplies to displaced families in the Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts.
In response to the crisis, Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for international support and climate compensation. The disaster has highlighted the increasing vulnerability of Himalayan communities to climate-driven events, such as glacial instability and bedrock failure.
