China-Nepal border disaster: Glacier collapse leaves 1,851 dead or missing
A massive natural disaster triggered by a glacier collapse on the China-Nepal border has resulted in at least 1,851 people dead or missing. The event, which released energy comparable to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, caused high-speed debris flows and flash floods that devastated villages, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure in the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi valleys.
In China, authorities in Tibet have issued a Level-IV emergency alert following the formation of a massive barrier lake. This lake, containing approximately 2 to 2.5 million cubic metres of water, poses a high risk of breaching, which could trigger further downstream flooding. Rescue operations in the affected Chinese regions have been temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of personnel.
In Nepal, search and rescue efforts are ongoing but complicated by destroyed roads and bridges. Approximately 100 workers remain trapped in a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower dam construction site. The death toll in Nepal has reached 469, with hundreds of foreign tourists, including citizens from dozens of countries, reported missing. Australia has pledged $3.6 million in humanitarian aid to support the affected communities.
