Nepal flood death toll reaches 1,451 with 5,786 missing
Twenty-five days after a massive glacial and rock collapse on Mount Langtang Lirung triggered a devastating flood in northern Nepal, authorities have reported 1,451 deaths and 5,786 people missing. The disaster, locally referred to as the ‘Himalayan tsunami,’ occurred on August 26 following the displacement of a two-square-kilometer mass of ice and rock at an altitude of 5,200 meters.
More than 20,000 security personnel remain deployed in the affected regions to conduct search and rescue operations. Efforts are currently concentrated on six hydroelectric projects where dozens of workers are feared trapped. To date, approximately 13,800 people have been rescued. The missing persons list includes 636 foreign nationals.
Identifying victims remains a significant challenge. Authorities have collected approximately 1,300 DNA samples from remains and 2,000 from family members. Forensic specialists from India, South Korea, China, and Singapore are assisting the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) in the identification process. The disaster also impacted the Tibet region of China, reporting 43 deaths and 519 missing persons. Total reconstruction costs for the damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure are estimated to exceed 4.7 billion dollars.
