Nepal seeks climate compensation from major emitters after deadly floods

Following a catastrophic glacial collapse on August 26 that devastated the Bhotekoshi river basin, Nepal has launched a diplomatic campaign to demand climate compensation from major emitters, specifically India, China, and the United States. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal stated that the nation is shifting its stance from seeking traditional aid to pursuing climate justice, asserting that the demand is a matter of ‘legal and moral liability’ rather than charity.

The disaster has resulted in a massive human toll, with reports indicating over 1,100 deaths and approximately 4,500 people still missing. The floods caused widespread destruction to homes, roads, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure across Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts.

In the House of Representatives, MP Ganesh Parajuli urged the government to utilize international mechanisms like the UN-linked Loss and Damage Fund. He also called for transparent DNA identification processes for victims and independent scientific investigations into the disaster. Advocates note that while Nepal contributes negligible greenhouse gas emissions—roughly 0.04% globally—it remains highly vulnerable to the extreme weather patterns caused by global warming.
