Nepal Education Ministry implements systemic policy reforms

The Nepal Ministry of Education and Sports, under Minister Sasmita Pokhrel, is pursuing systemic policy reforms to address long-standing disputes in the education and sports sectors. Instead of case-by-case resolutions, the ministry is prioritizing large-scale legislative changes, including the introduction of the Education Regulations Tenth Amendment, 2083, and a draft to replace the decades-old Education Act.

Recent efforts include resolving high-profile protests and hunger strikes. Following a seven-point agreement with Dr. Govinda KC, which ended his 11-day hunger strike, the ministry has commenced plans to operate a teaching hospital with at least 300 beds at the Martyr Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences in Geta, Kailali. Additionally, the ministry is working to resolve protests by medical interns and has reached an agreement with hunger striker Dilli Harijan.

Further regulatory measures are under development to govern foreign educational programs, educational consultancies, language training, and preparatory classes.
