Nepal ends search for thousands missing after devastating floods
The government of Nepal has suspended general search operations for 5,285 people still missing following devastating floods that struck the country on August 26. The decision, made approximately 40 days after the disaster, marks a transition from the search and rescue phase to a phase focused on rehabilitation and reconstruction.
Phanindra Paudel, head of the National Emergency Operation Centre, stated that authorities are now prioritizing the rebuilding of roads, bridges, and essential infrastructure. Officials are also examining legal processes to declare missing persons dead, which would allow families to settle insurance claims and manage bank accounts. While active searches for bodies have ceased, authorities will still retrieve human remains or valuables discovered during reconstruction efforts.
The floods caused significant destruction, including the loss of 12 hydroelectric projects, farmland, and numerous settlements. At least 1,455 deaths have been recorded, and 13,795 people were rescued during the emergency operations. The disaster has left thousands displaced, with officials estimating that billions of dollars will be required for recovery efforts. The suspension of search operations has prompted protests and vigils from families demanding more effective search missions.
