Nepal faces $4.74 billion reconstruction cost after deadly glacial floods
Nepal is facing a massive reconstruction effort following devastating floods triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-China border on August 26. Government assessments estimate the total cost of rebuilding infrastructure, energy systems, and social assets at approximately $4.74 billion to $5 billion. The energy sector has been severely impacted, with 13 hydroelectric projects and five solar plants damaged, requiring significant investment to restore the power grid.
The disaster has resulted in a heavy human toll, with over 1,300 deaths reported and thousands of people missing. Extensive damage has been documented across the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts, including over 7,500 private houses, numerous schools, health facilities, and cultural heritage sites. Transport networks were also crippled, with dozens of bridges swept away and significant road damage.
In response to the catastrophe, Nepali leaders, including Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, have called for 'climate justice,' arguing that the country bears the brunt of global emissions despite contributing only 0.1% to the global total. The government has requested $20 million in compensation from a United Nations fund. Meanwhile, local relief efforts are underway, such as Prabhu Bank's donation of NPR 2.11 crore and emergency supplies to displaced families.
