Nepal flash flood kills 469, leaves over 1,400 missing

A devastating flash flood near the Nepal-China border has claimed at least 469 lives, marking the country’s most severe disaster since the 2015 earthquake. The catastrophe is believed to have been triggered by a glacier burst at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters, which caused ice and rock to block the Bhote Koshi river. The resulting natural dam caused water levels to rise rapidly before bursting, sending a torrent of water, ice, and debris through the valley.

Authorities have rescued 1,545 people, but more than 1,400 individuals remain missing, including at least 540 foreigners. Among the missing are 90 Americans and three Hungarian nationals, including a mother and daughter. While 31 foreign tourists have been successfully rescued, search operations continue via helicopter in mountainous regions where roads are buried under thick mud.

The United States has provided $500,000 in emergency aid, and U.S. officials have offered further assistance for search and rescue efforts. Local authorities have issued warnings regarding further flooding as rescue teams navigate blocked access points and unstable riverbeds.
