Nepal and China face mass casualties after Himalayan glacier collapse FAST-MOVING
A devastating flash flood, triggered by a glacier collapse in the border region between China and Nepal, has caused widespread destruction across the Himalayas. As of Friday, the death toll in Nepal has reached at least 579, with reports from other sources suggesting the number could be higher. In the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet, authorities have confirmed five deaths and reported 558 people missing.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with the Nepalese Army deploying 14 helicopters to assist in search and rescue efforts. More than 4,400 people have been rescued in Nepal so far. However, significant challenges persist; accumulated mud from the flood waves is making helicopter landings and takeoffs difficult in areas such as Temure, Syabrubesi, and Mailung. Additionally, many people remain trapped in mountain tunnels, and the destruction of roads and bridges has isolated several communities.
Authorities are also monitoring a secondary threat: a large lake formed by debris blockage that has begun to overflow, creating the risk of further flooding. In Nepal, 1,924 people remain missing, including 517 foreigners. The disaster has severely impacted the Bhote Koshi river region, destroying infrastructure including homes, vehicles, and bridges.
